Health

The dachshund, like all hunting dogs, is a strong and robust dog and is also quite durable.
To maintain a healthy born dachshund, that is, without hereditary or congenital diseases, are required, as for the dogs of any breed, simple measures based on the basic rules of health such as:
➢ Submit the dog, every six months or at least 1 time per year, to a veterinary control
cane pauroso e vaccino
➢ Observe the expiry dates of vaccinations and perform correctly and carefully prophylaxis recommended by the vet against parasitic diseases.
➢ Pay attention to the signals that come from the animal itself such as loss of appetite, food refusal, listlessness and apathy, refusal to go out for a walk, excessive scratching or licking, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.
All of these behaviors if sporadic may mean nothing, but if repeated insistently has to be interpreted as a warning bell and cause the dog owner to contact their vet describing the problem. It is for the doctor to advise on how to behave or decide to visit the dog giving the owner any insights.
➢ Maintaining hygiene subjecting the dog to:
• cleaning teeth daily with a normal toothbrush for childrens and making the appropriate nibbling with occasionally bones or snacks
• cleaning of the outer ear and eye using gauze moistened
bagnetto• bath not too frequent (every 15 days if sufficient except some special circumstances have not soiled so great). The bathroom should be done using special shampoos that respect and do not cause damage to the hair and skin. Care must be taken not to get water in the ears also closing them with cotton balls. After the bath dry the dog with a towel without rubbing too much. In the summer just leave the dog outside where the sun and the warm air will complete drying. In cold drying must be completed by keeping the animal in front of a heat source or, if used as a child, with the hair dryer.
➢ Proper nutrition by administering regular meals are able to provide the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and so on.
In this respect, the home-cooked meal is unlikely to be perfectly balanced for the dog. Better to opt for a diet based on dry food of high quality that also allows you to modulate the diet depending on age, health conditions and the type of life led by the dog.
Remember also that the dog’s digestive system is very different from that of a man, and it follows that certain foods, although appreciated by the animal, are for him “poison” such as chocolate, fried foods with high-fat and sugars.
➢ Exercise and play. Important to drain the energy, to maintain a good state of health and the psychological aspect and socialization.
The dog needs to walk, play, run and be with other animals might otherwise vent their energy in aggressive and psychotic attitudes.

For the dachshund, in addition to the general rules mentioned above, it is necessary to adopt strategies to avoid specific diseases of the breed:

Scheletro Bassotto ➢ Vertebral Problems – Discopathies
In dachshund it exists a genetically premature aging of the intervertebral disc that loses its natural elasticity decreasing function of “shock absorber.”
Long back and short legs mean then a super job for the spine, and this makes the dachshund prepared to herniations of the intervertebral disc which in severe cases can lead to rupture of the same, and spinal cord compression. It follows a series of neurological problems whose outcome may be more severe paralysis of the hind limbs.
Some of our behaviors can help prevent these problems:
Avoid subjecting the dog to excessive force such as frequent and repeated jumps to get on and get off the couch, the bed or out of the car.
Do not let him face long flights of stairs.
Do not lift the dog by the legs but take it by the scruff or with one arm under the belly so that your back is not curved.
Never use the harness but a simple leash.
In the game to remember that it is better to throw a ball on the ground and not in the air!

➢ Obesity
To be avoided.
In an obese dachshund the back so the spine is subjected to greater stress as well as the joints of the legs that may develop osteoarthritis.
The liver is subjected to overwork up to lessen its functional capacity.
They also favored the development of diabetes and inflammation of the pancreas.

➢ Cold Diseases
The dachshund, especially the short-haired, suffers the cold and even more sudden changes in temperature. Therefore is appropriate that the kennel is located in a warm place, which always has a cover and that during walks in the cold season, is equipped with a coat of breathable fabric.
